New Year’s resolutions: my personal roadmap to achieving them

There’s something incredibly exhilarating about the start of a new year, isn’t there? It’s like opening a book filled with blank pages, ready to be written. This year, I’ve decided to take a more structured and achievable approach to my New Year’s resolutions, ranging from learning a new language to making my closet more sustainable. In this post, I’ll share my personal journey of breaking down these goals into manageable parts, hoping to inspire and guide you through your own resolution journey. If you are interesting in setting achievable yearly goal, I recommend you to start with this article. Let’s embark on this journey together!

N°1 I Embracing a new language: learning German

Learning a new language, particularly German, has been on my the New Year’s resolutions list for quite a while now, especially because -little detail- I live in Germany. The idea of conversing fluently in German has been a dream, but the road to language mastery can seem daunting, I have the feeling that I tried everything but I don’t give up. So, here’s my plan:

  • Daily practice: using language learning apps for at least 20 minutes daily. Consistency is key in language acquisition. I took the yearly plan of Busuu and if you want to try, you have 30 days for free via this link.
  • Weekly Language Exchange: partnering with a German-speaking friend for weekly practice sessions. This real-life practice is invaluable, I would like to install some German speaking days or moment at home, for exemple every Wednesday that’s German only.
  • Cultural Immersion: incorporating German culture into my daily life through films, music, and books. Really hard to watch my favourite movies in German, but I really see the difference when I am doing it.

N°2 I Deep diving into hormones and periods

Understanding my body better, specifically my hormonal cycles and periods, is not just about health; it’s about empowerment to embrace my periods and not suffering every month physically and mentally. To achieve this:

  • Educational Reading: allocating time each week to read articles, research papers, and books on hormonal health.
  • Consultation with experts: planning to consult with healthcare professionals and possibly attend workshops or webinars.
  • Journaling: tracking my own cycle, symptoms, and experiences to understand my body’s unique patterns. I bought the workbook from Womoon (in French), but you can find more options in this dedicated page.

N°3 I Creating a sustainable closet

Transitioning to a sustainable wardrobe is a significant step towards a more eco-friendly lifestyle. I already have long-lasting and eco-friendly piece, but I wand to step into it and go to the second step. Here’s how I plan to approach it:

  • Audit my current wardrobe: understanding what I own, what I need, and what I can let go of.
  • Conscious purchasing: committing to buy only from sustainable and ethical fashion brands & building my own guideline to choose the brand I want to purchase.
  • Embracing second-hand: I am already purchasing everything second hand, but I want to be even more conscious about second hand.

N°4 I Finishing my apartment decoration

Decorating my apartment has been a new but ongoing project since I move in a new city last November. Decoration is really important to me as I spend a lot of time home due to home-office, so I need to have an interior where I feel home. This year, I’m determined to complete it by:

  • Setting monthly goals: breaking down the project into smaller tasks and setting monthly goals.
  • Eco-friendly focus: choosing sustainable and eco-friendly decor options wherever possible.
  • DIY projects: embarking on DIY projects for personalized home decor, which also serves as a creative outlet.

N°5 I Crafting a morning routine and sticking to it

I’ve always believed that a productive day starts with a structured morning routine. My goal is to create a routine that energizes and sets the tone for the day, I don’t want to pressure myself and stick to it everyday from the first day of the year, but incorporating slowly some steps.

  • Plan the night before: i’ll decide on my morning activities the night before to avoid any decision fatigue in the morning and have plan A and plan B.
  • Incorporate mindfulness and exercise: Incorporating a light workout, like yoga or a short walk, to awaken my body and mind is really my goal. I would love to have a full workout every morning but that’s not achievable, so I will list my options and choose according to the D-day.
  • Consistency is key: Sticking to the routine even on weekends to establish it as a habit.

N°6 I The adventure of a lifetime: hiking Kilimanjaro

Scaling Kilimanjaro has been on my bucket list for years, and this is the year I turn that dream into a plan and therefore is part of my New Year’s resolutions. My best friend and I decided to hike there in September, so I have nine months to prep for it.

  • Physical training: embarking on a fitness regime tailored to build the stamina and strength needed for such a trek.
  • Research and preparation: thoroughly researching the trek, routes, necessary gear, and connecting with experienced hikers for tips.
  • Booking and committing: setting a date and booking the trip. Sometimes committing financially can be the biggest motivator!

N°7 I Making a financial plan to save more money

This year, I’m determined to get smarter about my finances and save more, I know better what I want, where I want to invest and the budget I need for each field (renting, grocery, …). This goal is part of my New Year’s resolutions for the first time.

  • Track spending: keeping a closer eye on where my money goes each month.
  • Set savings goals: establishing clear, achievable savings goals, like a percentage of my income each month.
  • Budgeting: sticking to a budget and cutting down on unnecessary expenses.

N°8 I Improving my body flexibility

As a part of my health and wellness journey, I aim to improve my body flexibility, I am convince that first it can help me with my periods journey to embrace it, as well with my morning routine as I consider it as a slow & light workout.

  • Regular stretching routine: incorporating daily stretching exercises into my fitness routine.
  • Pilate classes: attending pilate classes at least once a week for guided practice.
  • Progress tracking: keeping a log of my flexibility progress to stay motivated.

Each of these New Year’s resolutions is more than just a wish; they’re stepping stones to a richer, more fulfilling life. By breaking down each goal into achievable steps, setting clear timelines, and celebrating the small victories, I’m more confident than ever that I can make these dreams a reality. Here’s to a year of growth, adventure, and success – let’s make every moment count!
